Upper School Vocal Music Course Offerings

Grade: 12

Advanced Topics (H): Vocal Performance

This Honors-level course is designed for advanced vocalists and combines solo vocal study with advanced ensemble work, providing students with rigorous technical, analytical, and academic instruction. Students refine advanced vocal techniques—including breath support, intonation, vocal agility, diction, and stylistic nuance—through both individual performance study and ensemble rehearsal. Emphasis is placed on vocal health, technique, and disciplined practice habits.

Students engage in formal analysis of vocal repertoire through score study, textual and musical interpretation, and examination of historical, cultural, and stylistic contexts across a range of genres, including classical, musical theater, and contemporary works. Instruction includes both advanced ensemble practice (blend, balance, intonation, ensemble leadership) and solo performance practice (interpretive choices, expressive communication, and stage presence).

Honors-level expectations require students to demonstrate independence through peer critique, student-led rehearsals or sectionals, and vocal recitals. Assessment includes performance evaluations, written repertoire analysis, and sight singing assessments. Compared to the non-honors vocal course, this class requires significantly greater depth, independence, and critical thinking, to include: two additional after school performances, community outreach, and ensemble leadership development.

By audition only and 1 year of course study of Knight Singers/Advanced Vocal Performance.

Emphasis will also be placed on performance practice, including stage presence, emotional truth, and connection to the audience. Students will work on challenging repertoire across various genres, from classical to contemporary, with opportunities for solo and ensemble performances. This class is ideal for those looking to take their singing to the next level of artistry and vocal expression.
