          Transform yourself. Transform the future.

As a Catalyst student, you’ll explore a complex social problem from a range of perspectives while engaging deeply in an innovative slate of interconnected courses.

Your curiosities will be stoked as you evaluate, design, and derive insights from emerging solutions to today’s most pressing issues. You won’t just read about how innovators, engineers, and policy-makers work to solve problems—you’ll be mentored by and learn alongside them. During your Catalyst Semester, you’ll be called upon to be reflective and responsive, ambitious and adventurous, process-oriented and solutions-driven. At the end of the term, you’ll be fluent in systems thinking—an integrated, holistic way of seeing the world that can lead to meaningful change—and you’ll emerge with a greater sense of trust in yourself as a leader and a problem solver and with connections you can rely on for years to come.

Video: Catalyst students and faculty members talk about Menlo’s Applied Leadership Semester

          It’s Experiential. It’s Applied.
          It’s Relevant.

          Catalyst Biology Course, Fall 2025

“Catalyst helps you see the connections between subjects and why they matter in real life with present-day issues.”

          —student, fall 2025

Through the Catalyst Semester, students will develop flexible, holistic, and strategic leadership skills. Immersed in experiential, case study-based learning, they’ll learn how to effect meaningful change at a broad level.

          Case Studies that Fuel Inquiry

Case studies are remarkably effective at deepening students’ analytical, critical thinking, collaboration, and decision-making skills. This is why they are at the heart of the Catalyst Semester. Across all courses, students will apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, evaluate the impact of challenging leadership choices, and develop their own personal frameworks for change.

          Systems Thinking that Empowers Leaders

The dilemmas our world faces today rely on a systemic—rather than siloed—approach. Tomorrow’s leaders will need to address complex problems holistically and dynamically. Catalyst students will develop the skills and mindsets necessary to embrace this kind of fluid, nuanced problem-solving. They will grow in their ability to collaborate across diverse, even divergent, perspectives and to discern which choices may yield the greatest positive outcomes over time. They will emerge more confident in their ability to evaluate not only the problems they have seen but also problems they have yet to encounter.

          It’s Learning Beyond Confines

Transcend traditional classroom walls. During Catalyst, the Bay Area becomes your laboratory, your studio, and your think tank as you engage with real-world innovators in their element.

Off-Campus Experiences that Transform the Real World into Your Classroom

Traditional class periods dissolve as you move between opportunities to learn in the field, each designed to deepen your understanding, provide guidance from experts in the field, and foster lasting connections among your engaged cohort of peers.

          You may find yourself:

          • Interviewing a green investor, designer, or architect for a long-form, multimedia piece in the Catalyst magazine
          • Pitching a policy proposal that’s informed by your fireside chat with a sitting representative in Sacramento
          • Sampling soil from diverse regions throughout the Bay Area or learning about genetic engineering from a local lab
          • Reading and discussing Braiding Sweetgrass while working on a sustainable farm
          • Engaging in a design thinking workshop hosted by Stanford’s d.school, so as to improve your team’s engineered prototype

“It’s hard to put my Catalyst experience into words, because it’s such a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience. One thing I know for sure, though, is that this program has brought me so much hope for the future of our planet.”

Six Courses Investigating One Complex Issue from Multiple Angles

Juniors who enroll in the Catalyst Semester will be immersed in a curated slate of six integrated courses, all of which are centered around one complex issue per term. Anchoring your experience is a distinctive Leadership Seminar in which you’ll dissect real-world case studies alongside renowned guest speakers and innovators and develop a leadership toolkit that translates far beyond the semester.

The coursework will equip students to confront systemic challenges posed by a changing climate. To address these multifaceted and interconnected issues, curriculum will cross disciplines—it will be equal parts public policy and economics, science and engineering, journalism and literature, and applied mathematics. Whatever you intend to pursue beyond Menlo, the skills and mindsets you build here will empower you to lead.

It’s These Innovative Interdisciplinary Course Offerings

Catalyst courses break down traditional subject barriers through strategic co-teaching and real-world application. Your teachers will collaborate across disciplines, helping you forge connections between ideas and apply learning in authentic contexts. At the end of the semester, each student will collaborate toward a robust, multidisciplinary capstone project. The courses, many of which have honors options, have been specifically designed to stretch students while meeting Menlo’s graduation and California’s A-G requirements.

          Grade: 11

Catalyst Leadership Seminar: Igniting Change (Honors)

Complex challenges demand dynamic leadership—and no leaders are alike. Through compelling case studies of local and global leaders, you’ll examine how different approaches can spark systemic transformation. Featured cases move beyond climate adaptation and resilience to explore related challenges, such as global migration, artificial intelligence ethics, economic inequality, and civil unrest. What unites these cases? Leaders who demonstrate tenacity, adaptability, and creativity in the face of seemingly intractable problems. Guest speakers—often those featured in the cases themselves—will be invited in regularly to add context, challenge students’ thinking, and showcase a diverse range of leadership styles and identities. Throughout the semester, you’ll receive personalized mentoring to develop your own leadership voice and vision. You’ll emerge with more than just case studies and leadership theory: you’ll gain a clear sense of your capacity to drive change and practical tools to do so.

          Grade: 11

Catalyst Advanced English Seminar: Multimedia Narratives For Impact (Honors Option)

How do storytellers harness the power of words, images, and interactive media to shape public discourse? From Elizabeth Kolbert to Ta-Nehisi Coates, Amitav Ghosh to Robin Kimmerer, we’ll examine how influential voices transform our understanding of systemic social and environmental issues. We’ll also analyze a wide range of visual rhetoric, including multimedia profiles, narrative documentaries, and investigative journalism. Throughout the course, you’ll engage with challenging arguments; dissect the mechanics of persuasion; evaluate the impact of design choices; and hone your ability to craft powerful narratives. At the end of the semester, you will co-produce a new issue of the Catalyst magazine, a multimedia publication featuring student perspectives on leadership, climate, and society.

          Grade: 11

Catalyst Advanced History Seminar: Past Crises, Present Solutions (Honors Option)

What can past responses to environmental and economic challenges teach us about tackling today’s complex problems? Through the lens of environmental history, economics, and public policy, you’ll examine watershed moments that transformed how societies approach crisis. From the “California effect” to the recovery of the ozone layer, you’ll analyze how different solutions played out—including their unexpected consequences. You’ll explore both successful interventions and persistent challenges. How did Yosemite’s preservation reshape our relationship with wild spaces? What trade-offs emerged between economic growth and environmental protection? What makes some solutions stick while others falter? You’ll put this historical knowledge into action by researching and developing your own policy briefs. By semester’s end, you’ll be prepared to critically assess both the promise and pitfalls of proposed solutions.

          Grade: 11

          Catalyst Biology: Field Research

This rigorous biology course provides a framework for students to investigate all aspects of the living world. Students will have the opportunity to explore real-world phenomena through inquiry-based learning, field trips, labs, and data analysis. The units will address the concepts of ecosystem interactions, energy flow in a system, evolution, genetics, cell theory, and climate change. Students will build laboratory and argumentative skills while also getting to explore and understand the biology behind modern-day environmental issues plaguing California. To fulfill Menlo’s yearlong Biology graduation requirement, students will be enrolled in a second semester of Biology (beyond their Catalyst Semester) during their Junior year.

          Grade: 11

Catalyst Applied Science: Engineering for Extremes

How do we engineer solutions when “normal” no longer exists? In this course, you will use a Design Thinking lens to explore technologies shaped by climate change, from the systems that accelerate it to the innovations that mitigate its impact. We will examine current energy production technologies, approaches to large-scale implementation, and the value of looking to nature for design inspiration. Through partnerships with History, English, and Biology, we will deepen our learning through interdisciplinary perspectives and explore how scientific, cultural, and ecological narratives intertwine.

In addition to numerous other takeaways, you will gain a working understanding of how the U.S. energy grid functions and how collective action challenges shape our responses to crises. Drawing on biomimicry, you will design a technological intervention that targets a real component of the climate system. Throughout the course, you will balance conceptual exploration with creative, hands-on engineering projects that build both mindset and technical skill. By semester’s end, you will be equipped to imagine and prototype innovative solutions for an unpredictable future.

          Grade: 11

Catalyst Math: Pre-Calculus or Introductory Calculus (Honors Option)

Students enrolled in the Catalyst Semester will be supported to continue their Menlo Math trajectory. Regardless of the level at which they enroll, students will learn the same concepts as they would have if they were not enrolled in the Catalyst Semester and enjoy highly differentiated, problem-based, small-group instruction. In addition, they will enjoy opportunities to apply these concepts to other course areas as a means of understanding the real-world challenges at hand. Students will be enrolled in a second semester of this course (beyond their Catalyst Semester) during their Junior year. It is our intent to serve all interested students, regardless of Math level: should a student wish to enroll in Catalyst and require levels other than those listed, we encourage them to reach out to discuss their unique situation.

          Grade: 11

          Catalyst World Languages: Optional Elective

Spanish, Mandarin, French, Latin: Levels 3-4+

Students who wish to continue their study of one of the World Languages currently offered at Menlo will be supported to do so through an individualized language tutorial. Curriculum will be designed in consultation with Menlo World Language faculty and supported by carefully selected language tutors who will deliver a mix of live and asynchronous materials both in person and/or online. Exact programs will be determined based on the specific language, level, and needs of each student. Heavy emphasis will be placed on students’ authentic use of the target language and in ensuring they are prepared to re-enter our Menlo language classrooms during their Junior spring semester and/or fall of Senior year.

It’s a Dynamic Schedule that Ignites New Ways of Thinking

Catalyst’s school-day schedule will adapt to fit the needs of the curriculum and our students rather than adhering to Menlo’s typical block schedule.

No two weeks will look exactly the same, though students can generally expect to prepare for no more than four academic blocks per day. Class times and duration may vary to allow for extended project-based learning, interdisciplinary workshops, and off-campus experiences.

The Catalyst Semester will follow the same annual calendar as Menlo’s Upper School, including all school-wide breaks and holidays. Arrival, dismissal, and lunch periods will also be closely aligned, and students will still get to participate in major school traditions, such as the Holiday Assembly and Spirit Week, as well as arts, athletics, and extracurricular programs.

It’s Preparing You for College and Beyond

          Catalyst History Course

Our College Counseling Team regularly hears from admissions officers that they value students who take initiative, show leadership, and seek out transformative experiences. Catalyst is designed to provide just that.

It offers a unique opportunity for students to build real-world skills and stand out as motivated, forward-thinking applicants. Students will remain fully eligible to apply to all colleges, including the University of California system, and will maintain the academic rigor expected of Menlo School students.

          Interested in Becoming a Catalyst?

We are seeking curious, collaborative, engaged students who enjoy grappling with complexity and thinking—and learning—outside the box.

Here’s how to apply for a 2026-2027 Catalyst Semester

First, submit this brief application. Then, you’ll be invited to an interview with Maren Wolf, Director of Academic Innovation, and John Schafer, Upper School Director.

          • December 1, 2025: Application open for admission to 2026-2027 academic year. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis as applications are received. Students with busy schedules are encouraged to apply early so as to ensure their pick of interview slots. The interview is a critical part of the admissions process, and students will learn more about how to prepare once they apply.
          • February 2, 2026: Deadline to submit an application for the 2026-2027 academic year.
          • By February 27, 2026: All applicants will have completed an on-campus or Zoom interview.
          • By March 6, 2026: Admissions decisions shared with all applicants.
          • By April 2, 2026: Admitted students enroll in the Catalyst Semester via Menlo’s course registration process.

          Catalyst Magazine

As part of the Catalyst Advanced English Seminar, Multimedia Narratives For Impact, students collaborate to produce a digital magazine. In this inaugural Fall 2025 issue, students offer insights into their experiences and learnings in the first semester of this new program. As they note in the publication’s opening letter, “We invite you to explore the magazine, where students have produced an array of multimedia pieces to share their insights into the entire Catalyst semester. For us, this magazine is more than a recap—it’s a window into how Catalyst students see the world, question it, and imagine ways to make it better.”

          Frequently Asked Questions

No. Families who enroll in the Catalyst Semester will not be assessed any additional tuition fees for participation.

The Catalyst Semester is designed as a small school within our school. We will generally follow the same arrival and dismissal times as the Upper School does (8:45 am-3:00 pm). Occasionally, we may need to implement a modified school day schedule in which students arrive by 8:30 am or are dismissed by 3:15 pm to accommodate the needs of off-campus field learning experiences. We will notify students in advance should an opportunity arise that would require this.

We want students to stay engaged in the broader life of the School during their Catalyst Semester. When we are on campus, our lunch times will align with that of the rest of the Upper School, and students will still participate in Menlo traditions and key school- and grade-level-wide learning experiences that they love, such as the Holiday Assembly and Spirit Week activities.

Students who attend Catalyst will maintain their academic trajectories in Biology, Math, and (optionally) World Language beyond their Catalyst semester. Students who attend Catalyst in the Fall will continue their Biology course with only other Catalyst students in the Spring (and vice versa); and students will transition into and out of the same level of World Language and Math, joining the rest of their Upper School peers. Since Catalyst faculty are part of Menlo’s Upper School, they collaborate closely with the rest of a student’s teachers to design curriculum and to tailor our Catalyst courses to the level and learning needs of students enrolled.

Absolutely. The Catalyst Semester is designed to be accessible to all students, including those with robust extracurricular activities, both at Menlo and beyond. Outside of the short kick-off retreat at the beginning of the semester, students will be on campus in time for all after-school activities. Catalyst faculty also work closely with Menlo School Arts and Athletics programs to accommodate students’ needs for early dismissals or additional support.

No. Catalyst students experience the same high-challenge, high-support approach to teaching and learning that they enjoy throughout their time at Menlo. Where we differ is in offering students extended opportunities to think and experience learning beyond the confines of the classroom, as it aligns with vital issues they care about. We have seen that students who enroll in this program emerge with a greater sense of clarity of purpose and self-knowledge.

Faculty have been selected from both current Menlo faculty and from communities outside of Menlo. They have been vetted with the same comprehensiveness as all our faculty are, with a particular focus on their dynamism, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to collaborate across disciplines. They are also exceptionally student-focused and capable of adapting to student needs and interests continuously.

The Catalyst Semester requires a nimble schedule, with opportunities to adjust in real time. As such, we cannot commit to having students make every meeting with their Menlo Advocacy group. However, students are still welcome to meet with their Advocate during shared free times, such as lunch, free periods, and before and after school. Instead, during the Catalyst Semester, students will be paired with a Catalyst faculty Advisor. They will also continue to be supported with an intentional social-emotional curriculum embedded in our Leadership Seminar.

Yes! Students enrolled in Catalyst are still enrolled in Menlo School and, as such, get to enjoy all of Menlo’s resources during free periods, lunch, before and after school, and as part of our core coursework.

We can accommodate a maximum of 18 students per semester. Students who are interested in attending are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Students will be invited to indicate their preferences for Fall or Spring when they apply, though we are unable to guarantee that students will receive their top choice.

No. All rising juniors are eligible to apply to Catalyst, though a combination of teacher recommendation and prior academic performance will be factored into whether or not students are admitted to honors options in one or more courses. Students will have these conversations during the course enrollment process with the support of their Academic Advisor, Advocate, and current teachers.
